Rainbow trout are a popular fish that is a member of the salmonid family. Rainbows are typically a cold water fish living in fresh water. They are usually found in tributaries on the Pacific coast. Steelhead or steelhead trout are coastal or sea-run rainbow trout that come into the fresh water tributaries to spawn. Freshwater forms that have been introduced into the Great Lakes and migrate into tributaries to spawn are also called steelhead. Rainbow trout typically spawn in the spring when the water reaches at least six or seven degrees Celsius. The oldest recorded rainbow was eleven years.
Rainbow trout are a beautiful looking fish. They are a silvery blue with black spots and a very distinct red-pink stripe down its side. Adult stream rainbows typically range from one to five pounds. Where as the lake residing fish can reach up to twenty pounds.
